How Utah, Utah Donors Cancel Insurance After Car Donation

Cancel only after pickup and title hand-off, then make any required plate or registration updates before calling your insurer.

Do not cancel insurance before your ReviveRides pickup and title hand-off are complete. Use the pickup/title-transfer date as the effective date for removing or canceling coverage. If Utah DMV instructions require a plate, registration, or vehicle-record step before insurance cancellation, do that first. Canceling early can leave you uninsured for damage, theft, or liability while you still own the car. Some states also penalize an insurance lapse on a registered vehicle. After cancellation, ask for any prorated refund of prepaid premium.

The right cancellation sequence

1

Confirm pickup and title hand-off

First, make sure the vehicle has actually been picked up and the signed title has been handed off as instructed. If pickup is still pending, keep the insurance active. Until the car leaves your possession and the title hand-off is complete, you may still have legal and financial risk. Use the actual pickup/title-transfer date as the date you give your insurer.

2

Handle plates and registration

Before calling your insurer, check whether you must take any plate, registration, or vehicle-record action. State rules vary. Some states require plate surrender or registration cancellation. Others require you to remove the plates, keep them, transfer them, or file a notice. If Utah DMV instructions require any of these steps before canceling insurance, complete that step first. Keep a record of what you did.

3

Call with the donation date

Call your insurance company and say the vehicle was donated through ReviveRides. Give the pickup/title-transfer date as the effective date. Do not use an earlier date just to save a few dollars. Ask the representative to confirm whether any proof is needed, such as a donation receipt, title transfer note, or pickup document. Write down the date, time, and representative name.

4

Remove or cancel coverage

If the donated car was on a multi-car policy, ask the insurer to remove only that vehicle from the policy. Keep the rest of the policy active for your other vehicles. If this was your only insured car, ask to cancel the policy effective on the pickup/title-transfer date. If you will buy or register another vehicle soon, avoid a gap in required coverage.

5

Request your premium refund

If you paid ahead, ask whether you are owed a prorated refund for unused premium. Refund rules depend on your policy terms and billing status, so ask for the amount, method, and expected handling process. If you pay monthly, confirm that future automatic payments will stop or change. Also ask whether any documents are needed before the refund can be issued.

6

Keep written confirmation

Ask for written confirmation showing the vehicle removed or the policy canceled, the effective date, and any refund details. Save it with your donation paperwork, title records, and DMV notes. If a billing notice or automatic payment appears later, use that confirmation to correct the account quickly. For ownership-record steps, see our separate Release of Liability Guide.

Why the order matters

Insurance should stay active until the donated vehicle is no longer in your possession and the title hand-off is complete. If you cancel before pickup, a loss could happen while the car is still legally yours. That could mean no coverage for damage, theft, or liability. There is another issue: some states track insurance against registered vehicles and may penalize a lapse while a vehicle is still registered. Because plate and registration rules vary, follow the DMV sequence first when it applies, then contact the insurer.

What to tell the insurer

Keep the call simple. Say: I donated this vehicle. It was picked up and the title was handed off on this date. Please remove this vehicle from my policy, or cancel the policy if it was my only car. If the vehicle was garaged in Salt Lake City or another address, confirm the car’s VIN so the correct vehicle is removed. Ask the representative to email or mail proof of the change before you consider the task finished.

Common questions

Can I cancel insurance the morning of pickup?

No. Wait until pickup has happened and the title hand-off is complete. If the driver is delayed or the paperwork is not completed, you could still be responsible for the vehicle. Keep coverage active until the donation transfer step is actually done.

What effective date should I give my insurer?

Use the date the car was picked up and the title was handed off. Do not backdate the cancellation to an earlier date. If the insurer asks for documentation, provide the pickup or donation paperwork you have and ask that the vehicle change match the transfer date.

Will I get money back after canceling?

You may receive a prorated refund if you prepaid premium beyond the cancellation or removal date. The amount depends on your policy terms, payment status, and billing cycle. Ask the insurer to calculate the refund, confirm how it will be sent, and note whether any balance remains.

What if the donated car was on a policy with other cars?

Do not cancel the whole policy unless you mean to end coverage for every vehicle on it. Ask the insurer to remove only the donated car. Confirm the remaining vehicles and drivers stay insured, and get written proof showing the donated vehicle was removed effective on the transfer date.
