In Utah, the hard IRS cutoff for claiming your car donation on this year’s taxes is December 31—and the pickup must be completed by that date. With ReviveRides and Heritage for the Blind, you can still make it. We run free towing Monday–Saturday all year, including the week between Christmas and New Year’s, across the Wasatch Front and beyond. Same-day or next-business-day pickups are usually available in metro areas when you contact us before early afternoon on weekdays. To safely lock in a December 31 pickup slot, call or submit the form by December 27–28, and be sure you have a signed title.
Whether you’re in Salt Lake City, West Valley, Sandy, Ogden, Provo, Orem, Layton, St. George, or a smaller community from Tooele to Heber City, your donation can still qualify for this tax year. The process takes about two minutes to start by phone or online, and your vehicle doesn’t need to run or pass inspection—we’ll tow it at no cost. In return, you’ll support Heritage for the Blind’s services for people who are blind or visually impaired and receive a tax receipt that may help reduce your federal income tax when you itemize. Act now while there’s still time.

Prepare your signed Utah title
5-10 minutesBefore the tow truck arrives, locate your Utah vehicle title and sign where indicated for transfer. The driver will guide you if you’re unsure. Receive your tax receipt and claim
Within about 30 daysAfter pickup and processing, Heritage for the Blind mails your written tax acknowledgment, and for qualifying donations you receive IRS Form 1098‑C. Keep this with your records and use it when filing your return and Schedule A. As long as pickup was done by December 31, your deduction applies to that tax year.
Year-end tax deduction facts
December 31 is the decisive IRS cutoff
For car donations, the donation date is when the vehicle is actually picked up and ownership transfers, not when you first call. If towing happens on or before December 31, it counts for this tax year. A January pickup moves your deduction to next year.
Form 1098-C for larger vehicle deductions
If your donated vehicle to Heritage for the Blind is sold and your deduction is more than the IRS threshold, you’ll receive Form 1098‑C. This form shows the gross sale price and must be attached to your federal return to support your claimed deduction.
Your deduction usually equals sale price
In most cases, when Heritage for the Blind sells your donated vehicle, your allowable federal tax deduction is limited to the gross sale price noted on your receipt or Form 1098‑C. This is what you use when completing your return and calculating potential tax savings.
Itemizing on Schedule A is required
To benefit from a charitable vehicle deduction, you must itemize deductions on Schedule A of your federal tax return. If you take the standard deduction instead, you usually cannot claim an additional write‑off for your donated car, truck, SUV, or van.
Written acknowledgment within about 30 days
Heritage for the Blind sends a written acknowledgment of your car donation, typically within about 30 days of the sale or significant use. Keep this with your records—especially important if the claimed value meets IRS thresholds that require extra documentation.
